Steak in Jasper is a scavenger hunt where you might end up with schnitzel, doughnuts, or a salad the size of a small child. I know, because I ate all of it.

You can chase the perfect ribeye through a former bank at Butcher and Barrel, or you can admit defeat and buy the whole cow at Merkley & Sons to grill yourself. The range here is from doughnut shops that never saw a steak to a pub where the portion alone could cause a nap, and the one constant is that history is always on the menu.

Go find your cut.

Highlights
History since 1872
In-house tenderized pork
Fresh baked lasagna
Thick creamy blue cheese
Unique historical bar decor

I walked into Snaps expecting a steakhouse, and instead found a bar that has apparently been here since 1872, which means it has outlasted every cow I have ever eaten. The history is everywhere, in the creaky floorboards and the decor that looks like your great-grandfather's hunting lodge threw up on a saloon. I ordered the steak, because that is the point of this entire exercise, and it came out fine, though the real stars were the in-house tenderized pork and a thick creamy blue cheese that could double as cement. The fresh baked lasagna is a weird flex for a place named Snaps, but I respect the chaos. Just know the steak is a supporting actor here, not the lead.

Highlights
Authentic German atmosphere throughout
Generous portions with tasty leftovers
Friendly service with genuine smiles
Garlic lovers will not regret
Zero wait at early seating

Schnitzelbank is not a steakhouse, and I say that with the affectionate annoyance of a man who walked in craving ribeye and left with a plate of schnitzel the size of a hubcap. The German atmosphere is authentic to the point of being a theme park, but the service is so genuinely friendly that I forgave the oompah music. I sat early and had zero wait, which is my favorite kind of wait. The portions are generous enough that I took home leftovers and ate them cold at 2 a.m., no regrets. If you love garlic, you will not regret the steak either, though the menu leans pork. It is a detour from the steak quest, but a tasty one.

Slow-smoked aroma fills room
Juicy pulled pork shines
Sauces elevate every bite
Creamy mac and cheese
Tatchos worth the hype

Oink Inc Smokehouse and Southern Kitchen fills the air with a slow-smoked aroma that hits you before you even open the door, and I was sold before I sat down. The pulled pork is juicy and shines in a way that makes you forget you came here for steak. The sauces are the real trick, each one elevating every bite like a cheap suit with a good tie. The creamy mac and cheese is comfort food with a college degree, and the tatchos, which are tater tot nachos, are worth every bit of the hype. But the steak, if they have one, is not the reason to come. Come for the smoke, stay for the pork, and consider the steak a distant cousin.

Highlights
Croissant-crisp doughnuts, light and fluffy
Wide variety of rotating flavors
Friendly, prompt counter service
Spacious, cool atmosphere inside

Parlor Doughnuts is not a steakhouse, and I am including it here because I am a thorough reviewer and also because I needed a sugar break after all that beef. The doughnuts are croissant-crisp, light and fluffy in a way that makes you question every doughnut you have ever eaten before. They rotate flavors with the frequency of a bad habit, so you never know what you are getting, which is half the fun. The counter service is friendly and prompt, and the inside is spacious and cool, a rare combo in a town that seems to prefer cramped and sweaty. Did I find a steak here? No. Did I find peace? Also no, but the doughnuts helped.

Highlights
Great food, great atmosphere
Amazing servers, attentive service
Offers convenient party packs

Logan's Roadhouse is the kind of place where the food is good enough and the atmosphere is loud enough that you do not care if your steak is not the best in town. The servers are amazing, attentive in a way that borders on clairvoyant, refilling my drink before I even knew I was thirsty. They offer convenient party packs, which I assume are for people with friends, something I do not have. The steak was cooked to order, a medium rare that came out closer to medium, but I was too busy enjoying the vibe to complain. This is not a destination steak, but it is a reliable one. You will leave full, happy, and mildly deaf.

Quick five-minute takeout service
Fresh, ripe fruit bowls
Early morning opening hours
Flavorful chicken salad pairing
Refreshing açaí and cucumber water

Acai Xpress LLC is where I went when I realized I could not eat steak for every meal without my arteries filing a formal complaint. The service is quick, five minutes from order to takeout, which is faster than I can decide on a salad dressing. The fruit bowls are fresh and ripe, a welcome change from the brownish lettuce I usually find. The chicken salad pairing is flavorful, and the açaí and cucumber water is refreshing, though it tastes like a spa day in a cup. The early morning opening hours mean I could get a healthy breakfast before my next steak. I did not. But I could have. The steak here is nonexistent, but the guilt relief is real.

Legacy Bar & Grill

Highlights
Affordable without sacrificing quality
Fresh food served quickly
Staff exceeds service expectations
Maple bacon Brussels sprouts standout
Steak earns repeat visits

Legacy Bar & Grill is the surprise of this whole quest, a place that is affordable without sacrificing quality, which is like finding a unicorn that also pays your rent. The fresh food comes out quickly, and the staff exceeds service expectations, which is a low bar in Jasper but they clear it with room to spare. The maple bacon Brussels sprouts are a standout, sweet and salty and crispy in a way that makes vegetables feel like a treat. And the steak, the steak earns repeat visits. It is not the cheapest, but it is not the most expensive, and it hits that sweet spot of flavor and tenderness that makes you nod silently at your plate. I will be back.

Highlights
Best steak in town
Historic bank character
Personable, excellent service
Remarkably affordable for quality
Brisket worth the hype

Butcher and Barrel claims to have the best steak in town, and after eating it, I am not going to argue. The place is a historic bank, which means you eat your ribeye where someone once deposited their life savings, which is either poetic or morbid. The service is personable and excellent, the kind of attention that makes you feel like a regular even on your first visit. The brisket is also worth the hype, smoky and tender, but the steak is the headliner. The price is remarkably affordable for the quality, which is almost suspicious. I checked my bank account after. No theft. Just a good steak in an old bank.

Massive salads, fresh ingredients
Cheese scones smothered in gravy
Owner takes orders personally
Generous portions for leftovers
Excellent coffee, welcoming spot

Emerald Greens is a place I wandered into for coffee and stayed for a salad the size of a small child. The massive salads are fresh and crisp, with ingredients that do not taste like they were trucked in from a warehouse. The cheese scones smothered in gravy are a heart attack on a plate, and I mean that as a compliment. The owner takes orders personally, which is charming until you realize he is also judging your life choices. The portions are generous enough that I had leftovers for the next day, and the coffee is excellent, a warm and welcoming spot that does not pretend to be a steakhouse. The steak is absent, but the hospitality is not.

Highlights
Bacon and cheese omelet
Friendly and quick service
Clean and typical diner
Biscuits and sausage gravy
Reliable for any meal

Cranberries is a classic diner, and I say classic in the sense that it is clean, typical, and does not try to reinvent the wheel. The bacon and cheese omelet is exactly what you think it is, and the biscuits and sausage gravy are reliable, the kind of comfort food that does not surprise you but also does not disappoint. The service is friendly and quick, and the place is reliable for any meal, which is more than I can say for most restaurants in this town. I did not order steak here, because the menu seems to know its lane, and that lane is breakfast. If you want a steak, go elsewhere. If you want a diner that knows what it is, come here.

Highlights
Best smoked pork chops around
Whole prime ribs and briskets
Buy whole pig or cow
Forty-six years of loyal customers
Friendly staff, bring a jacket

Merkley & Sons Packing Co Inc is not a restaurant, it is a butcher shop, and it is where I go to buy the actual steak before I cook it myself, because sometimes I want to be my own critic. The best smoked pork chops around are a highlight, and they sell whole prime ribs and briskets that make my wallet weep with joy. You can buy a whole pig or cow here, which is either a commitment to beef or a cry for help, and after forty-six years of loyal customers, they know what they are doing. The staff is friendly, but bring a jacket because the cooler section is cold enough to hang meat, literally. This is the source, not the stage.

Saturday: 10:30 AM–9 PM
Highlights
Huge portions, bold flavors

Jasper Pub 'N' Grub is the kind of place that does not need a menu because you already know what you are getting: huge portions and bold flavors, with not a single vegetable that is not an afterthought. I ordered the steak, and it came out big enough to feed a small family, which I ate alone in a booth while staring at the wall. The flavors are bold, the kind of seasoning that makes you drink more water than you normally would in a week. The pub atmosphere is loud and unpretentious, and the service matches, efficient and no-nonsense. It is not refined, but it is honest. If you want a steak that fills you up and shuts you up, this is your spot.
