I walked into Old Hickory and ordered before my eyes adjusted to the dim light, which is the highest compliment I can pay a barbecue joint. In Owensboro, we measure a person by their stance on mutton and their tolerance for Worcestershire, and these spots cover both extremes, from Moonlite’s cavernous buffet where you’re announced like livestock to Ole South’s regulars-only stools.

The brisket at Ole South had a smoke ring so perfect it looked staged, while Old Hickory’s sauce fought me and won by the third bite. Go get messy.

Fast service, great first impression

I walked into Old Hickory and ordered before my eyes adjusted to the dim light, which is the highest compliment I can pay a barbecue joint. The chopped mutton and brisket arrived fast, both wearing that signature Worcestershire-based sauce like a coat that's too thin for winter but somehow keeps you warm anyway. The sauce is a weird, tangy kick that I initially wanted to argue with, but it won me over by the third bite. The burgoo deserves its own paragraph, but I'm not wasting words on a stew that good. Service was quick enough to make me suspicious they knew I was coming. It set a dangerous bar for the rest of my day in Owensboro.

Mutton and brisket buffet
Southern sides worth seconds
Chocolate pie and banana pudding
Big inside, fills fast
Service made us spectacle

Moonlite is a barn of a place, and I mean that with affection, because the buffet stretched out like a dare I was too hungry to refuse. The mutton and brisket sat side by side, both juicy enough that I forgot my table manners and just pointed at things. The southern sides, collards and mac and cheese, earned second helpings that I regret only because they left less room for the chocolate pie and banana pudding. The room fills fast and loud, and somehow everyone becomes part of the show. Our server announced our presence to the whole dining room like we were prize cattle. I laughed, but I also didn't go back for thirds. Spectacle has a cost.

Highlights
Excellent brisket with smoke ring
Tender ribs, not fall-apart
Friendly service, full regulars
Buffet with mutton and desserts

Ole South looks like the kind of place where regulars have their own stools, and I was not one of them, but the friendly staff treated me like I might be worth converting. The brisket arrived with a smoke ring so perfect it looked staged, and the tenderness did not disappoint, though the ribs were firmer, refusing to fall apart like some overdone apology. That's a choice, and I respect it. The buffet offered mutton and a row of desserts that I sampled with the discipline of a man who knows his limits, which is to say I had two slices of something. Full of regulars and good manners, this spot makes you want to come back just to prove you belong. I probably will, if only to see if the smoke ring was a fluke.
