I walked into Jasper expecting a quiet town with a decent sandwich shop and maybe a stoplight. Instead, I found a place where you can crack open a geode, get your bow tuned, and then contemplate stained glass that makes you question your entire belief system.

That’s the thing about this town: the riverwalk labyrinth sits a few minutes from a store selling black petunias, and the Dubois County Museum’s creepy dolls are somehow in the same zip code as garlicky escargot mushrooms. I’ve spent a decade covering this area, and I still can’t predict what’s around the corner.

Start with the Schnitzelbank’s sampler plate, then go smash a rock. You’ll thank me later.

Two hours of varied exhibits
Friendly and helpful staff
Creepy dolls and animal displays
Breathtaking historic train
Grandmas attic nostalgia trip

I walked into the Dubois County Museum expecting a quick look and a polite exit. Two hours later, I was still wandering through exhibits that range from genuinely impressive to gloriously bizarre. The staff greeted me like a long-lost relative and pointed me toward the historic train, which alone is worth the trip. But let's be honest: the creepy dolls and the taxidermied animals are the real stars here. They stare at you with that unsettling mix of innocence and judgment. Grandma's attic nostalgia hits hard, especially if your grandma collected porcelain clowns. It's free, it's weird, and it's utterly unforgettable.

Friendly, welcoming customer service

If you need a gift and you need it now, Jasper Flowers & Gifts has saved my skin more than once. The staff possess the patience of saints, especially when I stood there muttering about my aunt who 'has everything' and 'hates clutter.' They guided me to popcorn, chocolates, and a souvenir that didn't scream tourist trap. Delivery was prompt, and the recipient actually called to thank me. That never happens. The place feels like a small-town hug with better inventory. Just don't ask me what I bought. It's a secret, and also I forgot. Friendly, fast, and dangerously convenient.

Best black petunias around
Great for veggie lovers
Watermelons test your reflexes

I came for the vegetables and stayed for the black petunias, which are, without exaggeration, the best I have ever seen. The produce section is a wonderland for anyone who actually likes eating plants. But the real entertainment is the watermelon display. Those things roll around like they're training for the Olympics, and you'll test your reflexes trying to grab one without creating a cascade of green orbs. The staff laughed at me, kindly. It's a farm market, so expect dirt and charm in equal measure. For veggie lovers, this is practically a pilgrimage site. Bring cash and a steady hand.

Doodlebug Inc is the kind of store that makes you wonder why you ever shop online. The staff are so sweet and helpful that I almost felt guilty for asking a million questions about things I didn't need. Their prices beat the big-box stores, which is a miracle in this economy. When they didn't have an item, they ordered it special without any eye-rolling. And if you can't make it in person, their live Facebook shopping runs Tuesday through Friday, which is dangerously entertaining. They ship anywhere in the U.S., so no excuses. I left with three things I didn't know I needed and zero regrets.

Stunning stained glass artistry
Awe-inspiring spiritual architecture
Old-world European cathedral feel
Peaceful, reflective interior atmosphere

St. Joseph Church does not whisper; it roars with old-world grandeur. The stained glass windows are so vivid they look backlit by heaven itself, and the architecture makes you feel like you've stumbled into a European cathedral that somehow got misplaced in Indiana. I'm not a religious person, but I sat in a pew for ten minutes just breathing. The silence is thick and peaceful, broken only by the occasional creak of ancient wood. It's the kind of place that makes you lower your voice and check your posture. Whether you're seeking spiritual solace or just aesthetic awe, this church delivers without a single sermon.

Highlights
Genuine, warm, memorable service
Spacious portions with leftovers
Authentic German-style atmosphere
Garlicky escargot stuffed mushrooms
Sampler plate with sauerkraut

The Schnitzelbank is where I learned that 'sampler plate' is a promise, not a suggestion. The portions are so generous that I had leftovers for two days, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. The garlicky escargot stuffed mushrooms are a flavor bomb that should be illegal, and the sauerkraut actually converted me from a skeptic to a fan. The service is genuinely warm, like they're inviting you into their family's kitchen. The German-style atmosphere is authentic without being kitschy. If you're in Jasper and don't eat here, you've made a mistake. I forgive you, but barely.

Amazing staff and fun
Kids love this store
Great bow tuning service
Knowledgeable firearmand bow help
Worth the long drive

The Great Outdoors of Indiana is worth the drive from wherever you are, and I say that as someone who got lost twice on the way. The staff are amazing, and they know their stuff. My bow was shooting like a dream after their tuning service, which is not something I can say about most places. They helped me pick out a firearm without making me feel like an idiot, which is rare. The kids in our group loved the store, probably because there's so much cool gear to touch and pretend you're an outdoorsy hero. It's fun, it's practical, and it's absolutely worth the gas money.

Kind, helpful staff always
Kids run and play
Year-round energy release
Free water, fun games
Massage chairs for parents

Jumping Jasper is the reason I still have hair, and by that I mean my kids bounce there so I don't pull mine out. The staff are kind and helpful, always ready to point out the best spot for a five-year-old to launch themselves into a foam pit. The kids run, jump, and scream in pure joy, and the best part is they're tired afterward. There's free water to keep them hydrated, and the games keep them entertained for hours. Parents, the massage chairs are not a myth. They're real, and they're glorious. Year-round energy release, no weather excuses. I've never been happier to hear 'Can we go again?'

Geode Grotto

Highlights
Crack open your own geodes
Talk rocks with the groundskeeper
Worth the drive, oddly satisfying
A rock hound’s paradise
Hands-on geology, zero pretension

The Geode Grotto is a weird, wonderful place where you pay to smash rocks and call it science. The groundskeeper talked to me for twenty minutes about mineral formations, and I understood maybe half of it, but his enthusiasm was infectious. Cracking open your own geode is oddly satisfying, like a geological lottery ticket. I found a small purple crystal inside mine and felt like Indiana Jones. It's a bit of a drive, but worth it. Zero pretension, just rocks and the joy of smashing them. If you're a rock hound, this is paradise. If you're not, you will be after you leave.

Scenic trails with waterfall
Fluffy squirrels and wildlife
Perfect for family strolls
Dog-friendly paved loop
Photographer’s dream spot

Jasper Parklands is the kind of place where you go for a quick stroll and end up staying for two hours because the squirrels are too entertaining. The scenic trails lead to a waterfall that makes for a perfect photo op, and the paved loop is dog-friendly, which my canine companion greatly appreciated. The wildlife is bold; one fluffy squirrel basically posed for me. It's perfect for a family walk or a solo escape from your responsibilities. The photographer in me was thrilled with the lighting. The parent in me was thrilled there were benches. Bring a camera, bring a dog, bring a snack. Just don't feed the squirrels, no matter how much they beg.

Saturday: 6 AM–10:30 PM
Highlights
Shaded bike rides and bridges
Murals and picnic bench views
Disc golf and lawn games
Scenic downtown walking paths
Historic district access nearby

The Jasper Riverwalk is a lovely way to pretend you're being active while actually just ambling between murals and picnic benches. The shaded paths make for a pleasant bike ride, and the bridges add a touch of drama to your commute. There's disc golf and lawn games if you're feeling competitive, or you can just sit and watch the water. The historic district is right there, so you can feel cultured without walking far. It's not a hardcore hiking trail, but it's perfect for a lazy afternoon. My only complaint is that the bench views made me want to nap instead of continue walking. That's a compliment, honestly.

Jasper Riverwalk Labyrinth

Highlights
Ornate and peaceful riverside
Quiet spot for meditation
Easy access off Patola walk

The Jasper Riverwalk Labyrinth is a quiet little surprise tucked along the Patola walk. It's ornate without being fussy, and the riverside setting makes it feel like a secret garden. I walked the pattern slowly, which felt silly at first, but by the end I understood the appeal. It's a meditation spot that doesn't require you to say 'om' or wear flowing robes. You just walk, breathe, and listen to the water. Easy access from the main path, so you can stumble upon it by accident. I did. And I'm glad I did. It's a small thing, but it stays with you. Oddly peaceful. Oddly necessary.
